How Meditation Changes Your Looks (Before and After Photos)

This series of photos by Peter Seidler, called “Before and After”, shows the difference that meditation makes on our appearance only a month after practicing.  The series is a part from a larger project called “Contemplatives,” a visual exploration of the physiological qualities of meditation practice. The series was designed in order to explore the effects that meditation practice has on long-term practitioners.
Each participant in the project was asked to sit for a portrait on the first day of a dathun, a month-long meditation retreat. They were photographed against a consistent background. Before the photographing took place, each person was asked to consider what they were looking for in the practice period ahead. After the 30-days retreat, each participant sat in front of the same background and was asked to consider what the experience of mediation retreat had been for them. This resulted in this series of photos. The photos clearly show that each person has undergone an important transformative experience.
